With our precision key fitting and assembly techniques, we are ready to make any classic sax play better than it ever has.

If you desire the ultimate in performance from your vintage or modern professional saxophone, Horn Improvement offers the latest in exotic materials for pads, resonators and cork/felt substitutes. This makes for fast, quiet action, and exceptional response.

The Horn Improvement Mechanical Overhaul Process

Whether you choose classic or modern materials, a saxophone overhaul is only as good as the care put into the processes. At Horn Improvement our goal is to rebuild the mechanisms to more precise tolerances than the factory process was able to provide. In the world of automotive racing engines, this process is called “blueprinting” an engine. Your high-performance saxophone deserves the same high standards. The Horn Improvement saxophone “blueprinting” process includes:
1) Current key height is measured and recorded for reference
2) The saxophone is completely disassembled and thoroughly cleaned.
3) Minor dents are burnished away.*
4) The neck tenon is fitted and matched to the receiver.
5) The neck cork is replaced with premium cork
6) Toneholes are perfected.
7) Pad cups are leveled
8) Springs are custom tensioned and oiled, up to four springs replaced as needed.**
9) All keys are precision fitted to the body to for smooth and quick action, eliminating all side and end play.
10) All cork and felt contacts are replaced with the finest quality materials.
11) All pads and resonators are replaced with the premium materials of your choice and installed with shellac(except Schmidt pads).
12) The saxophone is then meticulously hand-assembled, insuring that each key is working perfectly. Each pad is carefully adjusted to match it to the tonehole. The mechanisms are regulated to open and close together perfectly.
13) The instrument is play tested and key height is adjusted for the ultimate in pitch, timbre, and response.
*More extensive damage will be repaired at additional cost, estimated beforehand.
**If more than four springs need replacing, we recommend replacing the entire spring set ( additional cost).
