Professional Flute Repair and Customization
|
At Horn Improvement, we are fanatical about flute repair.
We realize that often the difference between a good flute and a great flute
rests in the care that the technician spends to achieve that perfect seal
between pad and tone hole.
We use the Magnehelic tester to individually test each pad after precision
partial shimming to within .0005”.
Our attention to perfectly fitted mechanisms and balanced spring tensions
free the musician to create music.
Horn Improvement offers the musician a variety of high-quality pads to
bring out the best in any flute.
Straubinger flute pads, once revolutionary, are now the mainstay of artist
quality flutes.
These pads have truly raised the standard of excellence available in the
flute world.
They are now found as original equipment on such fine makes as Brannen,
Miyazawa, Powell, and of course, Straubinger flutes.
Horn Improvement has been a Straubinger certified repair shop since 2002.
The “perfect” pad requires a “perfect” flute.
Many additional procedures are necessary to prepare a flute for the
precision afforded by these high-tech pads.
The mounting spuds must be checked for solder integrity, centered
perfectly, and be of uniform height.
The pad cups must be centered and leveled consistently over the tone holes.
The pad washers must be tapered.
The tonehole surfaces must be perfectly level and graduated with a three
angle process.
This preparation takes precision tools and many hours of intense work,
usually using magnification.
During assembly, we use delrin stabilizers and mylar shims to insure a
lasting and stable adjustment.
Schmidt flute pads are unique in their use of metal foil for pad skin.
This provides a very reflective non-stick surface.
These high-tech pads are found as original equipment on fine flutes by
Landell, Williams, and of course, Schmidt flutes.
The flute preparation process we use is much like the process we use
for Straubinger pads.
At Horn Improvement we are also using Jim Schmidt’s innovative magnet
system to install pads, eliminating pad screws.
This system eliminates pad distortion, expedites repair processes, and
provides an acoustically superior bore without screw heads sticking into
it.
Valentino synthetic flute pads have recently introduced a .065” thin
pad designed for use with stabilizers in high-quality flutes.
They are durable and responsive and can be installed with slightly less
preparation to the flute.
Pisoni pads are generally recognized as the highest quality traditional
pad in the industry.
We make these available to those players that prefer a conventional felt
pad.
