Horn Improvement has become the repair shop of choice for
discriminating clarinetists throughout southern California
and beyond. Whether a routine servicing or a complete overhaul,
our clarinet specialists strive to bring out the best in any
fine clarinet. We offer a variety of pads to provide just the
right feel for the individual player. In addition to the
traditional premium felt or cork pads, Buffet Gore-tex,
Straubinger, and Valentino pads are available. Crack repair,
custom keywork, tenon repair, and tenon replacement are all

The Professional Clarinet Overhaul Process
|
This procedure is designed to bring any fine clarinet up to the
next level, offering a degree of precision and customization
unavailable during manufacture. The clarinet is first visually
inspected and objectives and available options are discussed
with the client. The instrument is completely disassembled and
cleaned. The wooden components are inspected for cracks and
other damage and addressed at this time (crack repair and most
other body repair incurs additional costs). The wood is treated
with organic oils. All side and end play is eliminated by
precision fitting of the keys to the body posts. The keys are
polished. The toneholes are sealed and meticulously surfaced.
All pads are replaced with a custom set based on the player’s
individual preferences and adjusted for a perfect seal. All
cork and felt contacts on the keywork are replaced with premium
materials. The tenon corks are replaced with custom-fitted top
quality materials. Next, the clarinet is carefully assembled
and regulated. A play test to reveal finer pitch and timbre
aspects that need attention is performed, and necessary
adjustments are made.

family instruments. Due to the variety of keywork options and instrument
condition variables, these instruments are best repaired by estimate.

The Standard Clarinet Overhaul Process

better specifications at a more modest expenditure. The instrument
is completely disassembled and cleaned. The wooden components are
inspected for cracks and other damage and addressed at this time
(cracks and other body damage repair incurs additional costs).
The wood is treated with organic oils. Excessive key play is
eliminated. All pads are replaced with Valentino pads and adjusted
for a perfect seal. All cork and felt contacts on the keywork are
replaced. The tenon corks are replaced. Next, the clarinet is
carefully assembled, regulated to factory specs, and play tested.
